Pregnant people are about 10 times more likely to become sick from listeria, and the illness can be fatal to the fetus. Foods made with raw milk are 50 to 160 times more likely to contain listeria, the agency said. Always carefully wash your hands after touching any type of hot dog, lunch or deli meat, the agency said. Toss opened packages of deli meats or any sliced by a deli after three to five days, and hot dogs after one week. Shelf-stable foods, such as canned tuna, sardines and salmon, will not increase the risk of listeria.

A California cheese and dairy company is the source of a decade-long outbreak of listeria food poisoning that killed two people and sickened more than two dozen, federal health officials said Tuesday. They include a person who died in California in 2017 and one who died in Texas in 2020, CDC officials said. The strain of listeria linked to the outbreak was found in a cheese sample from Rizo-Lopez Foods. Federal officials confirmed that queso fresco and cojita made by the company were making people sick. ___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Science and Educational Media Group.

UVALDE, Texas (AP) — Families of the children and teachers killed in the Uvalde, Texas, school massacre are renewing demands for criminal charges after a scathing Justice Department report again laid bare numerous failures by police during one of the deadliest classroom shootings in U.S. history. The Justice Department report says the FBI has assisted the Rangers but is not doing its own investigation. But she pushed back that timeline in December and said Thursday that she will need time to review the voluminous Justice Department report. Produced by a Justice Department office that supports local police, the document is among the most comprehensive accountings to date of what went wrong. The Department of Justice report faults state and local officials with undercutting the public's trust in law enforcement by repeatedly releasing false and misleading information about the police response.

The kidnappings are a stark reminder of the dangers faced by migrants as they travel across Mexico, crisscrossing areas rife with drug violence and weak rule of law. The National Guard confirmed the details in a separate statement. Fernando Reverte, president of Mapimi, a municipality which the migrants passed through after their capture and release, said the group of kidnapped migrants totaled about 1,500. Oct 27 (Reuters) - Relatives of children killed in the Uvalde school shooting confronted the Texas public safety director on Thursday and demanded he resign over the failure of his agency's troopers to confront the gunman quickly and possibly save lives. "You have disgraced our state," Cross said at a podium as he looked directly at McCraw during a meeting of the Public Safety Commission in Austin. "Steve, the time is now: If you are a man of your word, you will resign." Even so, McCraw said he would only resign if an internal investigation finds that his agency failed the community of Uvalde. In July, the Texas legislature released a report blaming the response on "systemic failures" and poor leadership.
